Beginning readers should already know their letter sounds, be confident blending short words, isolating beginning/middle/ending sounds, and using long and short vowel rules such as the “silent e” and “vowel teams” that make a vowel say its name.

Most middle and high school students at this level make consistent progress with one hour sessions weekly. For students who are also meeting for math or other lessons, a separate hour is suggested for language and writing lessons because writing is best done as a thorough, thoughtful process rather than a tacked-on extra. It takes time to read and study excellent work and imitate it well. This process is worthwhile, but not often quick.
