Growing readers benefit greatly from 1:1 instruction where they can learn to SPELL and WRITE well. Students will learn the following skills:
eading, studying, and imitating excellent writing including essays, poems, and speeches
longer pieces with increased stamina
spelling rules for words with diphthongs, soft and hard consonants, long and short vowels, and plurals
Greek and Latin affixes such as contradict (contra= against/opposite, dict = talk/speak, so contradict= to speak the opposite), intersection, foreshadow, semiannual, monotheism, and territory. These lessons include both decoding the meaning of academic vocabulary and applying these words to conversation and writing samples.
stamina for and increased interest in books including longer chapter books
punctuation rules
how to revise their own writing

Most middle and high school students at this level make consistent progress with one hour sessions weekly. For students who are also meeting for math or other lessons, a separate hour is suggested for language and writing lessons because writing is best done as a thorough, thoughtful process rather than a tacked-on extra. It takes time to read and study excellent work and imitate it well. This process is worthwhile, but not often quick.
